Why Does My Wig Parting Look Too Wide?

A Quick Answer

A wig parting can look wide because of its construction, the way the fibres are separating, the colour of the base or the lighting. First identify which of these you are seeing before trying to change it.

A Closer Look

A wide-looking parting is not automatically a fault. Some cap constructions deliberately create a visible scalp-like area, while other styles may show more of the base when the fibres separate. Look closely in ordinary light.

Is the parting itself wide by design, or have the fibres simply moved away from the intended line? If it is the latter, you may be able to redistribute the fibres gently with your fingers. The colour of the base also matters.

A pale or contrasting base can be more noticeable in bright light or close-up photography than it is in normal viewing. If you are considering colouring, filling or otherwise altering the base, check the manufacturer's guidance first. Lace, monofilament and other cap materials are not automatically compatible with hair colour products.

The aim is not necessarily to make every parting narrow. The useful question is whether the parting looks appropriate for the construction and style of the wig when viewed normally.

Practical tips

  • Check the part in normal room light as well as close-up.
  • Redistribute separated fibres gently rather than pulling them out.
  • Identify the cap construction before deciding whether a change is appropriate.

The Takeaway

A parting that looks wider in a close-up mirror is not necessarily a problem in everyday viewing. Understanding the construction can prevent unnecessary changes.
