Why Does My Wig Look Flat?

A Quick Answer

A flat wig may simply need gentle separation, root lift or a change in parting. Start with the least invasive adjustment and remember that some styles are intentionally sleek.

A Closer Look

A synthetic wig can look flatter than expected after storage or handling. Fibres may have been compressed or all pushed in one direction. Some styles also have a deliberately smooth silhouette, so flatness is not always a problem to solve.

Start by gently shaking or separating the fibres with your fingers. Lift at the roots without pulling the cap. If the construction allows it, changing the parting can also redistribute volume.

If the wig has permatease, it may already contain root volume that becomes more visible once the surface fibres are separated. Smooth the surface rather than aggressively teasing it. Heat-friendly fibres may allow controlled reshaping, but the maker's temperature and method should be followed.

Standard synthetic fibres should not be treated with hot tools. Assess the result from normal viewing distance. A little movement and separation can make a larger difference than trying to create maximum volume.

A reassuring note

Flatness is often a small styling issue rather than a disaster. Gentle separation and time to settle may be all the wig needs.

Practical tips

  • Start with finger separation before reaching for tools.
  • Lift the roots rather than pulling the cap.
  • Check whether the style is intentionally sleek before trying to add volume.
