We often think about caring for the hair fibres of our wigs, but what about the part that sits against our head? The inside of your wig cap deserves a little attention too.
Over time, sweat, natural oils, makeup and styling products can build up inside the cap, particularly around the hairline, ear tabs and nape. Keeping these areas clean helps your wig feel fresher and more comfortable to wear.
The good news is that you don't need to give your wig a full wash every time the inside needs a little attention.
Start by checking your wig's construction
Before cleaning your wig, take a look at the inside of the cap. Different constructions need slightly different care.
- Wefted caps: These have rows of fibres attached to strips of material. Clean gently around the wefts without pulling at them.
- Lace-front wigs: The lace at the front is delicate, so avoid rubbing, scrubbing or stretching it.
- Monofilament sections: These areas need a particularly gentle touch to protect the fine material and the way the fibres are attached.
If your wig has specific care instructions, follow those first. Some caps are more delicate than others.
Step 1: Turn the wig inside out carefully
Place your wig on a clean, stable surface or hold it gently in your hands. If you need to turn the cap inside out to reach the areas you want to clean, do so carefully without stretching the lace or pulling on the fibres.
You don't need to turn the entire wig inside out if you can reach the areas that need attention.
Step 2: Prepare a gentle cleaning solution
Mix a small amount of wig-friendly shampoo with cool water, following the product's instructions. Avoid hot water, harsh detergents, household cleaners or products containing strong solvents.
Dampen a soft, clean cloth with the solution and wring it out well. It should be damp rather than dripping wet.
Step 3: Gently wipe the inside of the cap
Use the cloth to dab or wipe the inside of the cap, concentrating on areas that tend to collect residue:
- Along the front hairline.
- Around the ear tabs.
- At the nape of the neck.
- Around any areas where sweat or styling products have accumulated.
Work gently rather than scrubbing. If you notice a stubborn mark, repeat the process patiently instead of applying more pressure.
Be especially careful around lace and monofilament sections, as these can be damaged by rough handling.
Step 4: Remove any remaining residue
If the shampoo instructions recommend rinsing, use a separate cloth dampened with cool, clean water to gently remove any remaining product. Avoid making the cap unnecessarily wet.
If you are unsure whether your wig's construction can tolerate this method, check the manufacturer's care guidance before proceeding.
Step 5: Let your wig dry completely
Gently blot any excess moisture with a clean towel, taking care not to twist or wring the cap.
Place the wig on a suitable wig stand in a well-ventilated area and allow it to air-dry completely before wearing or storing it. Keep it away from direct heat and radiators.
Avoid using a hairdryer to speed up the process unless the manufacturer's instructions specifically permit it. Even heat-friendly synthetic fibres can be affected by inappropriate heat, and the cap materials may have different limitations from the fibres themselves.
How often should you clean the inside of your wig cap?
There isn't one schedule that suits everyone. It depends on how frequently you wear your wig, how much you perspire and whether you use products around your hairline.
If you wear your wig daily, a quick inspection and occasional gentle wipe may be helpful between full washes. If you notice an odour, visible residue or a build-up of oils, it's a good time to give the inside some attention.
Remember that wiping the cap is not always a substitute for washing the whole wig. When the fibres themselves need cleaning, follow the full washing instructions for your particular wig.
